Platform - Kurt Vonnegut: An Optimist Posing as a Pessimist

  Wayne Laufert is a former newspaper writer and editor who works for the federal government. Since 2013 Wayne has been a member of the Baltimore Ethical Society, for which he serves as co-chair of its Membership Committee. He runs the Vonnegut Baltimore book club.

Description: The American novelist Kurt Vonnegut became famous for writing Slaughterhouse-Five and other best sellers that were characterized by their knowingly humorous and sincerely humanistic perspective. Was his outlook optimistic or pessimistic? What about humanism's? Wayne Laufert, the author of Behaving Decently: Kurt Vonnegut's Humanismwhich was published in June by the American Humanist Association, considers the roles of optimism and pessimism in Vonnegut's work and in Ethical Culture's humanistic worldview.
